American Express is hitting “refresh” on one of its popular cashback card options. Today, the company announced a revamped version of its Blue Cash Everyday card. Now, the card will include enhanced rewards earning rates and adds credit opportunities. On top of that, the card’s design is getting a fresh look.

First, the Blue Cash Everyday card will now earn 3% back at U.S. supermarkets, 3% back at U.S. gas stations, and 3% back on U.S. online retail purchases. However, these rewards categories are capped at $6,000 in spending each ($18,000 total across the three). Meanwhile, all other purchases as well as category purchases beyond that cap will earn 1% back. Previously, while the card did earn the same 3% rate at U.S. supermarkets, it earned 2% at U.S. gas stations and U.S. department stores — although, in this case, the 2% categories weren’t capped.

In addition to the enhanced rewards categories, the Blue Cash Everyday card has also added some brand-specific credits. Now, cardholders can earn up to $15 a month ($180 a year) on Home Chef online meal kit purchases. Additionally, customers can earn up to $7 a month in credits (for a total of $84) when they spend $13.99 or more per month on an eligible “Disney Bundle” streaming plan. These bundles include Disney+, ESPN+, and ad-supported Hulu, although that lattermost platform can be upgraded to ad-free for an additional cost. Notably, despite the addition of these credits and the increased rewards, the card continues to carry no annual fee.

Per usual, American Express is also offering a welcome bonus for the revamped card. New cardholders can earn $200 in cashback when they make $2,000 in purchases on their card within their first 6 months.

Commenting on the updates to the card, Amex’s EVP of Global Lending and Cobrand Anthony Cirri stated, “We’ve refreshed our popular Blue Cash Everyday Card and added new benefits that make it easier – and more rewarding – to do the things you do every day. Our Blue Cash Everyday Card now offers more ways to earn cash back across our Card Members’ top spending categories including online shopping, groceries, and gas.”

Overall, the changes to the American Express Blue Cash Everyday Card are likely positives for most customers. With the increased earnings on gas as well as the category swap from department stores to online retail purchases, the majority of cardholders are likely to see greater benefits from the new product. On the other hand, the new caps on these two categories (previously only the U.S. supermarkets category had a cap) mean that a small percentage of power users may be disappointed. Meanwhile, although the added credits are nice — especially given the card’s no annual fee status — they are fairly specialized, thus limiting their use. Still, all things considered, this seems like a win and a welcomed refresh for the Blue Cash Everyday.
